1年生 英語 Pumpkin Carving with 1st Graders

10月22日(木) Halloween is coming soon! Sundai Elementary School is getting ready for Halloween; there are decorations in the English Center and pumpkin drawings in the hallway.

Today was a special day for the first grade. We made jack-o’-lanterns with pumpkins! Unfortunately the students could not actively participate due to the coronavirus, but they could still enjoy the experience. The students learned the custom where people carve pumpkins to make jack-o’-lanterns that they then put in front of their front door to keep away evil spirits. The students could each hold the pumpkin to see how heavy it was and what the outside felt like. We then cut off the top and cleaned out the inside. There were many seeds! Each student got a chance to look inside the pumpkin. They then decided on the shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth. They decided on a traditional pumpkin face, with triangle eyes and nose, and a zig-zag mouth. After we finished cutting out the face, the jack-o’-lantern was finished!
Halloween is an exciting time of year!
