1年生 英語 Pumpkin Carving with 1st Graders

10月28日(木) Halloween has come to Sundai Elementary School! Pumpkin drawings are in the hallway as they are every year, and there are Halloween decorations in the English Center. First graders today first learned about Halloween at the start of the class, as well as the custom where people carve pumpkins to make “jack-o’-lanterns” that are put in front of their front door to keep away evil spirits. We then made jack-o’-lanterns with real pumpkins! The students first took turns holding the pumpkin to see how heavy it was and what the outside felt like. We then cut off the top and cleaned out the inside. There were many seeds! Each student then got a chance to take out as many seeds as they could and clean up the inside pumpkin. The students then decided on the shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth. The students in each class decided on a traditional pumpkin face, with triangle eyes and nose, and a zig-zag mouth. After we finished cutting out the face, the jack-o’-lantern was finished! We look forward to Halloween on October 31st!
